Macbook Air- Can This Thin(g) Survive Long?

With the current ad campaign inciting an optimistic fervor among the Apple crowd, the new Macbook Air promises to become a massive seller. And while its sleek, thin design looks technologically impressive, is it really the ideal computer that it purports itself to be. I would like to look at a couple of details to at least question the practicality of the Macbook Air.

First things first, it rarely gets mentioned that the MacBook Air does not feature any sort of CD or DVD drive. In an age where watching movies on a laptop or burning music compact discs via your computer is prevalent, it seems that the lack of a disc drive should make potential buyers apprehensive about making such a large purchase. Yet instead, Apple would rather the focus be shifted to the fact that a Macbook Air could fit into a typical manila envelope.

Speaking of the Macbook Air’s thin design, let us take a closer look at how practical the machine is. I am aware that we are in an age where computers are able to “brace themselves” for a fall (so to speak), but I have a hard time believing that this thin device will be durable enough to withstand an accidental drop on the floor. In fact, gun to my head, I would say that the Macbook Air would be prone to malfunction should it take a particularly long drop. Maybe some people favor the breathtaking design, but I would rather invest my money into a more “heavy duty” device.

Apple is currently on an unprecedented popularity streak. By designing futuristic devices and appealing to the “cool” crowd, Apple has made it bigger than ever. No doubt, this new laptop will become a huge success. But if the problems I raise are valid, and the company continues to release products with an emphasis on design, giving practicality a backseat, Apple may soon be in for a rude awakening.
