Myspace - Making Space for Babyboomers and Seniors
June 19, 2008 by FD

Myspace.com is not for kids and teenagers anymore. Myspace has become the premier social networking site for middle aged adults and seniors. Their personal pages are not only a profile of their likes, dislikes, and views, but it has become a launching pad for links that can be used for business, community, and sharing news. Just like the original AOL chat rooms, older users can find a genre of friends and clients that share the same interests or business needs. Myspace is a whole new world that has evolved past music and movie sharing and kids trying to find friends and love online.
In 2006 Myspace put in adult restrictions that protected teen users and though seen as a teen social network site, adult users soon found a space for themselves to create a more mature social network sharing the same site as the teens but becoming unique amongst themselves. There are even adult themed graphics so that the middle age adult or senior can display some of their own personality through the representations of pictures, background art and other visual representations. Whether it is sports, fashion, or even senior issues, the graphic representation will bring out the life of the page and the personality of the owner.
More and more babyboomers and seniors are using Myspace to communicate with others their own age. They can create virtual social circles where they have literally thousands of choices of peers that share the same interests and also share the same history. It is hard for seniors to get out, socialize and meet new friends. Now they can have a plethora of new social experience from the comfort of their own home. For example, if an older man has a past time of fly fishing, he can tell the story of the big one that got away to new acquaintances and even old friends all using his Myspace page.
Myspace offers the more mature adult a platform to branch out in the electronic business world. If the user in internet savvy they can link their webpage to the Myspace page through hyperlinks and drive business to their website. Here they can increase business and sell their product or service to customers all over the world. Social bookmarking is hot and Myspace providers know it. They want you to make money and provide links and tools that will let even the most inexperienced user of a computer be apart of the internet economic landfall.
The people who grew up with the computer age are coming of age themselves. It is refreshing that the middle age and senior computer user can be apart of a social network that was almost taken over by the younger generation. Myspace has proven that it is socially conscious by setting up filters and protecting children from cyber stalkers and now it has proved again that it can meet the needs of today’s older Myspace members. Whether it is for socializing, business, or just plan fun Myspace and baby boomers have found a harmonious partnership in the social network world.
